Preparation of a geothermal energy program in Central America

In November 2014, Kaltenbach Energy Consulting participated in a mission to prepare a new regional geothermal program by the International German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in Central America. The program included visits to energy ministries, regulation authorities, utilities and project developers in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
The outcomes from the intense conversations have contributed to the design of a customized program strategy. On a global level, Central America has enormous potential for geothermal energy. Studies estimate a potential of 6 GW of installed capacity in high enthalpy which could provide the regional with environmentally friendly base-load energy. Low enthalpy geothermal projects for feed in or for industrial self-consumption have additional promising potential.
